What Is the Best Tactic in OSM? (2026/27 Guide)

Tactics Guide · Updated: · 2 min

What is the best tactic in OSM right now?

There is no single best tactic: the right one depends on your opponent's formation, the venue and whose squad is stronger. This table is what the engine recommends today against each common formation. Every cell is the formation to play, then Pressure / Style / Tempo.

Looking for one fixed answer to 'the best tactic' or 'the strongest tactic' in OSM is the most common mistake in the game. Tactics in OSM change with your opponent's formation, with whether the match is home or away, and with the gap in squad strength. That is what sixteen years of playing it teach you.

Away and Weaker

The instinct here is to drop back and wait for a counter, but a passive, deep approach is not right in every match. The opponent's formation, the venue, squad strength and the match context have to be weighed together; OSM Next Level does not push one universal attacking or defensive approach. The current matrix answers most of these scenarios with an attacking setup rather than a defensive shape. That is a method choice, not a measured result. The current formation and Pressure/Style/Tempo values for each opponent are in the live tables on our counter-tactic pages: those tables are rebuilt from the engine on every deploy, while numbers written into an article freeze on the day they are written.

Home and Stronger

If the opponent plays a shape that sits back (such as 5-2-3 Counter Attack), you have to build the play: width and tempo pin them in their own half. If the opponent pushes up, you use the space they leave behind. The current formation and slider values for this scenario are live on the opponent formation's counter-tactic page. Every value given is a recommendation, not a measured win rate, and it does not guarantee a result.

Why There Is No 'Magic' Tactic

No formation and slider combination in OSM beats every opponent. Each of our formation pages below shows Pressure/Style/Tempo values tested against that opponent: adapting to the opponent wins, copy-pasting a tactic does not.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best tactic in OSM?
There is no single answer, and that is not a gap, it is how the game works. The right tactic depends on your opponent's formation, on whether the match is home or away, and on the squad-strength gap. Put those three into the Counter Engine and you get the answer for that scenario.
What tactic should I play away when I'm weaker?
The instinct is to drop back and wait for a counter, but a passive, deep approach is not right in every match. The current matrix answers most of these scenarios with an attacking setup rather than a defensive shape; that is OSM Next Level's method choice, not a universal rule. The current values per opponent formation are in the live tables on the counter-tactic pages.
What should I play at home when I'm stronger?
If the opponent sits back, you have to build the play: width and tempo pin them in their own half. If the opponent pushes up, you use the space they leave behind.
Are the numbers in the table at the top current?
Yes. Nobody typed that table: it is rebuilt from the engine every time the site is updated, from the same source as the tables on the formation pages. The rest of the article explains the method; the numbers always live in the table.
