OSM Squad Value: How to Read the Strength Balance

Tactics Guide · 2026-09-05 · 4 min

The first question to ask before a match is not which tactic to play — it is where the strength balance sits. Are you stronger than the opponent, equal to them, or weaker? That answer largely determines which tactic is the right one.

Why Squad Value Matters

Squad value on its own guarantees nothing about the result, but it is the most practical indicator of the strength balance available to you. In OSM you can see both your own total and your opponent's before the match; putting those two numbers side by side takes a few seconds and shapes the rest of the match plan.

How to Compare the Values

Ratioing the two against each other gives a practical starting point. If your value is close to theirs, treat yourself as Equal and pick a balanced setup. Noticeably higher and you are the Stronger side; noticeably lower and you are the Weaker one. These three categories are a framework for simplifying the tactical choice rather than a precise formula — near the boundary, whether the match is at home or away becomes the deciding factor.

What Squad Value Does Not Show

The total is a summary of the whole squad, not of the eleven who will take the field. A deep bench pulls the total up without necessarily lifting the first eleven by the same amount. Injured, suspended and low-condition players still appear inside that number too. So treat the value gap as an opening signal, not as the only evidence.

The Approach for Each Category

You are stronger: consider playing more aggressively, with higher Pressure/Style/Tempo — especially at home. You are equal: a balanced approach is usually safer, neither too risky nor too passive. You are weaker: low Pressure, a compact defensive shape and a patient counter-attack is the ground most managers prefer in this scenario.

Home and Away Change the Answer

The same strength gap does not call for the same tactic at home as away. Even with a slight advantage away from home, starting cautiously can be reasonable; against an equal opponent at home, taking the initiative looks more sensible. In short: the strength balance answers "how much risk can I take", and the venue answers "when should I take it".

When the Gap Is Large

If the opponent is clearly stronger, setting the objective as keeping the match level rather than dominating it is more realistic: stay compact, avoid unnecessary risk, and try to take the few clear chances you get. In the reverse case — when you are clearly the stronger side — the advantage should not be read as an automatic win. A strong squad played with the wrong setup drops points too.

Growing the Value Across a Season

Turning the strength balance permanently in your favour comes from squad planning, not from any single match: signing the right profiles for the right positions, investing in young players and developing them, and selling at the right moment. The transfer guide sets that out step by step.

It Is Not Enough on Its Own

The strength balance gives you the general direction, but the opponent's specific formation is still decisive. Once you have compared the values, take the exact Pressure/Style/Tempo numbers for their shape from the counter-tactic pages or use the Counter Engine. Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I am stronger or weaker in OSM?
Compare your total squad value against your opponent's before the match. Close together means treat yourself as equal; noticeably higher or lower puts you in the stronger or weaker category. Near the boundary, home or away is what settles it.
Does a higher squad value mean I will win in OSM?
No. It is the most practical read on the strength balance, but it guarantees nothing — a strong squad played with the wrong setup still drops points, and the total includes injured, suspended and low-condition players who will not help you.
What tactic should I use when I am the weaker side in OSM?
Low Pressure, a compact defensive shape and a patient counter-attack is the ground most managers prefer. The exact values depend on the opponent's formation and whether you are home or away.
Why does squad value not match my first eleven in OSM?
Because it summarises the entire squad, not the eleven who play. A deep bench raises the total without raising the strength of the side that takes the field, which is why the number is a starting signal rather than proof.
