OSM League Objective: How to Plan the Points You Need

Manager Guide · 2026-09-05 · 4 min

Answering "am I doing well or badly right now?" in mid-season is something most managers never actually work out. A simple points calculation settles it, and lets you decide far more deliberately where to take risk over the weeks that remain.

The Calculation

Subtract matches played from total matches to get the matches remaining. Subtract your current points from your target to get the points needed. Divide the points needed by the matches remaining and you have the average you need per match. Because a win is 3 points and a draw is 1, that average converts directly into "how many wins do I need".

A Worked Example

Say it is a 30-match league, you have played 20, you have 38 points and the target is 65. Matches remaining: 10. Points needed: 27. Average per match: 2.7 — which means you need wins in most of the ten that are left. Turning that into a concrete combination makes it easier to hold onto: 8 wins and 3 draws is 27 points, so that is what you have to find in those ten matches.

Is the Target Reachable?

If the average you need per match is at or below 3 — the value of a win — the target is mathematically reachable. If it is above 3, meaning even winning every remaining match would not be enough, you need to revise the target honestly. In that case moving it down a place is more productive than spending the rest of the season chasing a number you cannot reach.

Weight the Remaining Fixtures

The matches left are not equally hard. Note how many are at home and how many away, and what the opponents' squad values look like. Rather than expecting points from hard away matches, putting the home fixtures and the relatively weaker opponents into a "must win" column produces a more realistic plan. That turns the average from a single number into a target spread across specific weeks.

Where to Take Risk, and Where Not To

If you have fallen behind the target, consider playing more aggressively at home and in matches where you hold the strength advantage. Away and as the weaker side, limiting the damage is usually the more sensible call. For how to read the strength balance, see the squad value guide; for opponent-specific values, the counter-tactic pages.

Redo the Maths Regularly

This is not a one-off calculation. Repeat it every few weeks and you see early whether the target is coming closer or drifting away. A run of unexpected dropped points pushes the required average up quickly, and noticing that early is far better than taking panicked risks in the closing weeks of a season.

If You Are Going to Miss It

If the league objective is mathematically gone, the remaining weeks become preparation for next season: it is a good window for giving young players minutes, bringing the squad's age down and listing the players you intend to sell. The transfer guide and scout guide both help with that planning.

The Plan Is Applied One Match at a Time

Whatever the maths says, points come from individual matches. Each week take the exact Pressure/Style/Tempo values for your opponent's formation, and run the pre-match checklist before kick-off. No calculation guarantees a win; but knowing where you stand is what tells you how much risk a given match is worth.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate what I need for my OSM league objective?
Matches remaining is total matches minus matches played. Points needed is your target minus your current points. Divide the second by the first and you have the average points per match you need — and since a win is 3 and a draw is 1, that converts straight into how many wins.
How do I know if my OSM league target is still possible?
Compare the average you need per match against 3, the value of a win. At or below 3 it is mathematically reachable. Above 3 it is not, even winning out — at which point revising the target down beats chasing it.
Should I take more risk if I am behind my OSM league objective?
Selectively. Playing more aggressively at home and where you hold the strength advantage is worth considering; away and as the weaker side, limiting dropped points is usually the better call.
What should I do if I cannot reach my OSM league objective?
Use the remaining weeks to prepare for next season — give young players minutes, bring the squad age down, and list the players you plan to sell. The season is not wasted if it funds the next one.
