Which Formation When in OSM? The Formation Selection Guide
Formation Guide · 2026-10-06 · 10 min
The honest answer to "which formation is best?" is that no formation is best in every match. Each has a purpose, a strength and a gap. The right pick comes from looking at the gap in the formation you face. This guide introduces OSM's formations one by one, when to pick which, and how your squad affects that choice.
1. The formations at a glance
| Formation | Game plan | Purpose | Strength | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4-3-3 A | Wing play | Open closed defences | An extra attacker through the attacking midfielder | Behind the overlapping full-backs |
| 4-3-3 B | Wing play | Protect the back line | Balance through the defensive midfielder | Behind the overlapping full-backs |
| 4-4-2 | Passing game | Balanced, safe football | Two solid banks of four in the middle | The wings open up |
| 4-2-3-1 | Shoot on sight | A threat from outside the box | A double pivot shields the defence | The lone striker is isolated |
| 4-5-1 | Shoot on sight | Clog the middle | Numbers in midfield | Lone striker, little width |
| 5-2-3 | Counter attack | Punish lost balls | A back five and a fast front three | Creates little at home, pinned by width |
| 5-3-2 | Counter | Counter with control | Three central midfielders | The back five stretches under width |
| 5-3-1-1 | Counter | A patience contest | A very compact block | Very few players in attack |
| 5-4-1 | Shoot on sight | Maximum defence | Nine players behind the ball | Almost no way forward |
| 6-3-1 | Counter | Park the bus | An unbreakable back six | Immobile against switches of play |
2. 4-3-3 A and 4-3-3 B: the two shapes the matrix picks most
Both play four defenders and three forwards; the difference is in midfield. A has an attacking midfielder, B a defensive one. The current matrix recommends these two variants most often, because wing play attacks the weak point of many opposing shapes directly.
| Opponent | Variant usually picked | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 5-4-1, 6-3-1 | 4-3-3 A | An extra attacking midfielder to break a closed block |
| 4-5-1, 5-3-2 | 4-3-3 B | Protection in front of the back line is worth more than an extra attacker |
Details in the 4-3-3 A and 4-3-3 B guides.
3. Live table: level squads against every opponent
The table below shows the setup recommended against each opponent formation when the squads are level. It is rebuilt from the matrix on every deploy.

4. 4-4-2: reliable, but it opens on the wings
The classic balanced system with two banks of four and two forwards. Hard to break through the middle on possession alone. But when both full-backs push up the wings open, and fast wing play wears it down. A reliable pick for balanced squads without standout wingers; it does not promise a high ceiling on its own. How to play against it: the 4-4-2 page.
5. 4-2-3-1 and 4-5-1: two faces of the long shot
Both are built on long shots. The 4-2-3-1 carries a double pivot in front of the defence and three attacking midfielders ahead; the 4-5-1 clogs the middle with five midfielders.
- Their shared gap: the lone striker is isolated.
- What not to do against them: retreat into a low block. That lets them take the shots they want from 25 metres.
- What to do: take the ball and keep play in their half.
6. 5-2-3, 5-3-2 and 5-3-1-1: the back five and the counter
The back-five family waits for a lost ball. The 5-2-3 plays for speed of exit with one more man up front, the 5-3-2 for control with one more in midfield, and the 5-3-1-1 for a contest of patience.
Details: 5-2-3, 5-3-2, 5-3-1-1.
7. 5-4-1 and 6-3-1: emergency formations
OSM's two most defensive shapes. They keep nine or ten players behind the ball and barely attack on their own. They are emergency formations, not default picks. Our engine recommends neither; their pages explain how to break them with width and patience when you meet them: 5-4-1, 6-3-1.
8. Count your squad in too
The formation has to fit your players. Check the shape you picked by the opponent against your squad:
| Your squad's profile | What it means |
|---|---|
| Fast, strong wingers | Wing play works at full strength |
| Weak wingers, strong midfield | Three-man midfields gain value |
| A strong attacking midfielder | The 4-3-3 A seat fills naturally |
| A strong defensive midfielder | The 4-3-3 B seat fills naturally |
| Players would play out of position | Strength can drop; fix the shape or the squad |
Which profile to buy for which position is laid out formation by formation in the transfer guide.
9. Ready comparisons
To see two formations side by side: 4-3-3 or 5-2-3, 4-4-2 or 4-3-3, 5-2-3 or 5-3-2, 4-2-3-1 or 4-5-1, 6-3-1 or 5-4-1. All on the comparison page.
Summary
Every formation has a purpose and a gap. Pick by the opponent's gap, check it against your squad, take the exact values from the engine. The matrix picks the 4-3-3 A and B most often but answers every matchup on its own; the 5-4-1 and 6-3-1 are emergency formations. Open the Counter-Tactic Engine and pick your opponent's formation.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the best formation in OSM?
- No formation is best in every match. The right pick depends on the opponent's formation, the venue and the strength gap. The current matrix recommends the 4-3-3 A and B most often, but answers each scenario on its own.
- What is the difference between 4-3-3 A and 4-3-3 B?
- The central midfielder: attacking in A, defensive in B. A is picked to break closed defences, B to protect the space in front of the back line.
- Is the 5-2-3 a good away formation?
- It is popular with managers, but our current matrix does not recommend it. When you face a 5-2-3, it answers not with its mirror but with an attacking setup on the wings.
- When do you play the 6-3-1?
- It is an emergency formation, for very strong opponents where even a draw is a good result. Our engine does not recommend it, and explains how to break it with width when you face it.
- How should my squad affect the formation?
- Check the shape you picked by the opponent against your squad: without fast wingers wing play weakens, a strong midfield three makes three-man midfields worth more, and a player out of position can lose strength.
