🎯 OSM Style of Play Guide: Defensive or Attacking?

Updated: · Figures: the free Counter Engine's 54 public recommendations, computed when this page was built.

The style of play slider runs from defensive (low) to attacking (high). In the free engine's 54 recommendations it sits between 51 and 79, averaging 67: 72 when you are stronger, 63 when you are weaker.

What style of play changes

A higher style sends more players forward and takes more risk in possession; a lower style keeps players behind the ball. It sets how attacking your team is as a whole, while pressing decides what happens without the ball and tempo how fast you play.

How the engine decides it

The starting point is how attacking the formation itself is; the strength difference then moves it. The engine caps that movement, so a very large gap does not push style to an extreme.

Frequently asked questions

What style of play should I use in OSM?
It depends on squad strength more than anything: the free engine averages 72 when you are stronger and 63 when you are weaker, within a 51-79 range.
Is a higher style always more goals?
No. More attacking players also means more space behind them. The engine raises style only as far as your strength advantage supports.
