⚡ OSM Tempo Guide: Fast or Slow Against Each Formation

Updated: · Figures: the free Counter Engine's 54 public recommendations, computed when this page was built.

Tempo sets how fast your team moves the ball. In the free engine it ranges from 47 to 75 (average 61) and depends most on the opponent's defence: faster against crowded 5- and 6-back shapes, slower against 4-back sides that shoot on sight.

What tempo changes

High tempo moves the ball forward quickly and gives a packed defence less time to organise; low tempo keeps the ball longer and controls the rhythm. Faster play also means more lost balls, so tempo is a trade-off, not a dial to max out.

How the engine decides it

The opponent's number of defenders matters most. Against five or more defenders the engine raises tempo, because breaking a crowded block takes speed. Against an open defence it lowers it. Squad strength then shifts the value: the engine does not give high tempo against a stronger opponent.

Frequently asked questions

What tempo should I use against a 5-back formation?
Higher than usual. In the free engine, tempo against 5- and 6-back formations sits clearly above its average against 4-2-3-1 and 4-5-1, because a crowded defence has to be broken with speed.
Is high tempo good in OSM?
Only in the right match. The engine lowers tempo when your squad is weaker and against open defences.
